Museum Collaborators

Knitting the Herring seeks to capture, preserve and highlight the unique knitting heritage of coastal fishing communities of Scotland; it aims to identify and document outstanding gansey material held in various museums and private collections across the country. The project builds upon the Recognised Collection of National Significance held by the Scottish Fisheries Museum, on existing knowledge, and on the legacy of the three-year Moray Firth Gansey Project (2009-2012), which focused on the tradition of hand-knitted ganseys in the Moray Firth’s fishing communities. We are also working alongside the Sheringham Museum, who have established the Heritage Gansey Knitting Network (HGKN) and are currently working on a gansey heritage project for England.
